One Year Done Virtually

I have just completed over one year of my grief counseling private practice on the zoom platform.

And here’s the good news.  IT WORKS.

Prior to March 2020, I was sitting in my midtown Manhattan office conducting grief counseling sessions for children and adults – ages 2 to 92!

Getting the Support You Need Can Be Hard

Let’s face it. Grief is exhausting. Grievers often lack energy, and are sometimes in a “grief fog,” with less of a focus.  And there can be time constraints with child care challenges, work challenges, and managing a new life.

Pre-Pandemic Grief Counseling Norm

Grievers came to our grief counseling sessions, knowing how important it is to fully experience all the feelings around the loss, in a private, confidential space, and learn how to navigate the “new normal” and gain some good solid coping skills.

Post-Pandemic Grief Counseling New Norm

But then came the pandemic. My clients were still grieving, but we couldn’t be together in person.  So, we started zooming and we’re still doing it.  And over the past year, of course, I acquired new grieving clients whom I’ve never met in real life.  And still, IT WORKS.

Here’s why virtual grief counseling can be extremely effective and productive.

  • It can sometimes be more comfortable for grievers to be in their own space at home.
Some actually open up more when they are in their own familiar settings.

  • You can access and feel your feelings and emotions, no matter where you are sitting.

  • It’s easy to witness emotions through the zoom screen. I can see the flow of tears and sadness; I can detect that glimpse of a smile forming with the sharing of a happy memory of a loved one. In fact, we can see each other in closer proximity than with the usual distance of office seating.

  • It takes time to travel to a counselor’s office, and time can be a precious commodity after the death of a loved one.  It can be nice to not have to travel to sessions … at rush hour, or when it gets dark early, or when it’s rainy or snowy.

  • Having a grief counseling session takes 55 minutes when it’s done virtually.  In real life, it can take up a lot of lunchtime or evening, with preparing, waiting, and traveling time.

  • Reading stories, drawing activities, and game-playing with kids is just as fun over zoom.  They just have to provide their own crayons!

  • If I have an occasional technical difficulty with my computer/zoom, we get to practice patience and human error, and we pick up our phones and continue the session.

  • When you research grief counselors or get recommendations from trusted friends and relatives, you can now easily use those out-of-area recommendations.

  • I can now help grievers everywhere!  My clients are from near and far… nationwide and worldwide. People refer me to their friends and relatives no matter where they live. I now have the opportunity to help more people heal from their grief than ever before. (One great thing that came out of this past year!)

My clients do great grief work with me, virtually. Telecounseling works, and you deserve the opportunity for support and healing too.
